Big firm charged in Sexual Harassment of Tenants

Across the Pacific, another major scandal is shaking up the rental market; this time in Bakersfield, California. A property management company, RCM SoCal, has agreed to pay a settlement of AU$280,000 (approximately KSh 28 million) to female tenants who were subjected to years of sexual harassment by a longtime property manager.
According to the California Civil Rights Department (CRD), the manager engaged in persistent harassment, including unwanted advances, inappropriate comments, and even coercion; offering rental benefits in exchange for sexual favors. When tenants resisted, they faced eviction threats, ignored maintenance requests, and other forms of retaliation. After a thorough investigation, authorities determined that RCM SoCal failed to act despite knowing about the misconduct.
As part of the settlement, the company has agreed to permanently bar the property manager from ever working in that role again, implement strict training for future managers, and designate a fair housing coordinator to handle complaints.
Lessons for the Kenyan Rental Market
While these scandals are unfolding in Australia and the United States, they shine a spotlight on issues that also plague Kenya’s rental sector. Many Kenyan tenants have faced harassment and exploitation at the hands of rogue landlords and property managers. Cases of unfair evictions, and even demands for bribes to secure a rental unit are not uncommon.
If you or someone you know has faced rental fraud, harassment, or unfair treatment, don’t stay silent. Speak up, report it, and demand a rental market that works for everyone, not just those in power.
